Vertigo

Vertigo is defined as the sensation of feeling off balance or feeling that everything around you is spinning. While vertigo often stems from an inner ear problem, it can also be caused by neck injuries, which can be treated with chiropractic care. Often, the symptoms of vertigo include swaying, loss of balance, headaches, ringing in the ears, nausea, sweating, and a feeling of spinning. These symptoms are usually triggered by movement of the head or neck and can last anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.

Vertigo cases stemming from neck injuries can be treated using chiropractic treatments such as manipulation and Epley Maneuver. Manipulation targets joints, particularly in the upper neck, to realign the muscles leading from the neck into the brain. This allows the nervous system to operate properly, thus leading to improved balance and relief from dizziness. The Epley Maneuver is used to help clear “debris” from the vestibulocochlear apparatus, which is the “balance center” of our bodies. When debris builds up in the vestibulocochlear apparatus, balance can be greatly reduced causing feelings of dizziness and spinning sensations. During the use of the Epley Maneuver, the chiropractor moves your head into a number of different positions, allowing the crystals that are causing the dizziness to move away from the affected nerves.
