Ankle Pain
The ankle is the most commonly injured joint in the body. The ankle is very important since many knee and even lower back pain can be attributed to improper gait mechanics from a bad or old ankle sprain that did not heal correctly. The ankle is made up of three bones held together by ligaments. The ankle also has many tendons, which connect muscles to the bones of the foot. One of these tendons, the Achilles, allows you to walk and jump.
Ankle pain is often due to an ankle sprain (injury to a ligament). Even though ankle sprains are common, people with repeated or severe ankle sprains may suffer from chronic (long term) joint pain or weakness in the ankle. There are other causes of ankle pain, including arthritis or nerve injuries. For this reason, proper diagnosis and treatment are important.
When dealing with pain related to the lower extremities, a functional assessment of the entire lower kinetic chain from the low back to the foot has to be considered, since many ankle problems are often times related to dysfunction in another area in the lower kinetic chain.
