Back pain is very common among adults, with over 80 percent of adults reporting that they’ve dealt with a case of back pain at some point. In order to cope with the pain they’re experiencing, many of these people end up using some type of analgesic to reduce their pain levels. In fact, a study published in 2014 found that 72% of adults facing back pain were using some sort of pain reliever to reduce their pain and 32% of back pain patients were using a prescribed opioid for pain relief.
At Advanced Chiropractic & Rehab, Inc, we hate to see those in pain rely on pain relievers to mask the source of the pain. Chiropractic treatment can be effective not only at alleviating pain, but also preventing the pain from returning in the future. Not only can chiropractic be more effective than pain relievers at freeing patients from the back pain they were experiencing, but chiropractic patients are also much less likely to suffer an adverse drug reaction stemming from pain relievers.
A recent study, focused on the effects of chiropractic on reducing adverse drug reactions, looked at the medical records of over 19,000 adults who had multiple doctor visits related to back pain. This study found that patients who were utilizing chiropractic care experienced 51% fewer adverse drug reactions than patients who utilized traditional medical care. Of the patients in the study, none of the chiropractic patients suffered from any sort of drug withdrawal, while there were 15 cases of drug withdrawal among the traditional medical care patients. In addition to these findings, the study also concluded that chiropractic patients tended to be generally healthier than those receiving traditional medical care. A follow-up study by the same researchers found that chiropractic patients were 55% less likely to be prescribed opioids, with which we have all become familiar with the dangers in recent years.
With the opioid epidemic still raging on throughout the United States, it is more important than ever to find ways to move away from dangerous prescription pain relievers. Chiropractic care helps the body heal naturally, helps the body stay healthy, and allows you to stay away from opioids that can cause adverse drug reactions. In the end, chiropractic is more safe, often more effective, and often costs less than traditional medical care.
