Concussion Recovery Program

Understanding and Identifying Concussions →

The treatment of concussions has come under a lot of scrutiny in recent years in large part due to the extensive coverage in the news with regards to NFL players.  This has brought about a change in the way that a concussion is handled.  Concussion recovery programs are ever changing and evolving to provide the latest and most advanced techniques used for helping to recover balance, gaze stability, focus, gait and mood.  The quicker you identify the symptoms and start to treat them the quicker your athlete will be able to return to play.

Here at Advanced Physical Medicine & Athletics it is our duty to treat your athlete as if they were our own son or daughter. We offer a comprehensive Concussion Recovery Program that takes the athlete from initial injury to return to play, all under one roof.  Dr. Lyons is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP®), and a member of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (ACBSP) Concussion Registry. He mixes cutting-edge technology along with clinical examination to assist in the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of concussions.

Dr. Lyons employs athletic trainers that are highly skilled and educated certified healthcare professionals that work with athletes at all levels of competition to prevent, evaluate, and treat sports injuries.  Our athletic trainers work under his direction and coordinate care across multiple touchpoints, including parents, athletic directors, coaches and/or employers to provide optimal health care for the athletes. We want all parties to feel confident that the athlete is ready to return to play or activity without fear of long-term effects.

Each individual’s case is unique and must be treated as such. When a person has the misfortune of being a part of an event that leaves them possibly concussed, we offer peace of mind knowing that the individual is getting the highest quality care.  We understand that the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of concussions must follow a precise progression, however we also recognize the importance of a customized plan of care.  This personalized plan should be implemented to help increase physical and mental activity for the athlete.

We will oversee the administration of activities to build up their physical and mental capacity without irritating their symptoms.  Allowing the athlete’s aerobic ability to progress as tolerated in order to support the brain’s functional demands for physical tasks. Additionally we provide education for the athlete to assist with managing symptom-provoking activities, like dizziness, headaches and vertigo. Our trained and experienced staff have an extensive background in concussion protocol as well as human anatomy, human physiology, biomechanics and exercise physiology which makes them experts at understanding the complexities of high-level rehabilitation.

An additional benefit to bringing your concussed athlete to us is that we keep on staff Licensed Massage Therapists (LMT) who can deliver various forms of soft tissue mobilization (STM), such as sports massage and cupping. It is stated by the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) that sports massage can improve performance, reduce pain, prevent injury, encourage focus and shorten recovery time. This is done by eliciting a mechanical response due to the pressure and movement of the tissues along with response from the nerves to trigger a reflex from the stimulation of the massage.

Through our comprehensive concussion management program we offer the athlete:

    • Vestibular/Balance/Ocular motor rehabilitation
    • Vision and coordination testing to help asses deficits
    • Baseline testing
    • Orthopaedic evaluation of the neck, as well as contributing factors that may be causing headaches
    • Return-to-play/activity program initiated once a patient is symptom-free to ensure full safety
    • Specialist referral

Baseline Testing

At the beginning of a sport season or when an athlete first comes on board we will conduct a baseline test when the athlete is non-concussed.  This will give us a record of what the normal cognitive function of the athlete is.  If a head injury were to occur and a concussion is diagnosed, we will follow up with a post-injury test to compare to the baseline. The information provided from the results will help to determine the proper course of action to take during the concussion recovery protocol.  The following screens are offered at our Boardman location.

    • K-D TEST Pro Baseline
    • Standardized Assessment of Concussion (SAC)
    • Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT5)
    • King-Devick Test in association with Mayo Clinic
