Dr. Michael C. Lyons of Advanced Chiropractic & Rehab, LLC. has completed the Graston Technique (GT) training and is now using GT, a specific technique of Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) in his practice.
With the new certification, Dr. Lyons is now qualified to perform Graston Technique and more effectively and efficiently address soft tissue lesions and fascial restrictions, resulting in improved patient outcomes. The technique uses specially-designed stainless steel instruments with unique treatment edges and angles to deliver an effective means of manual therapy. The use of the GT instruments, when combined with appropriate therapeutic exercise, leads to the restoration of pain-free movement and function. The instruments are not meant to replace a clinician’s hands, but to complement them. Historically, the Graston Technique has had positive outcomes in 75-90 percent of all conditions treated. It is equally effective in restoring function to acute and chronic injuries, and pre- and post-surgical patients.
Dr. Lyons says “Graston is a very effective tool for myofascial tissue work and is much like manual myofascial release, active release, trigger point dry needling, and other techniques we currently employ. Graston is the innovator of IASTM and has done most of the qualified research on the subject giving me a better understanding and ability in selecting the most effective treatment options for my patients.”
Graston will give him another treatment option for patients and is very effective for treating large fascial areas and chronic tendonopathies like achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis. While he has been utilizing IASTM for awhile, learning the Graston Technique and treatment protocols will be extremely valuable.
