Neck pain, also known as cervicalgia, affects nearly 70% of people at some point in their lives. The most common causes of neck pain are sitting and inactivity. Neck pain can also be referred pain, signaling a problem in another part of the back or spine, the tightening of muscles in the upper back and neck or joint disruption in the upper back.

The specific causes of neck pain are numerous with various levels of severity. Some examples include whiplash, herniated disc, spinal stenosis, stress, acute coronary syndrome, poor posture, osteoarthritis, disc degeneration, and injury. Sitting for prolonged periods of time can cause a break down in the postural muscle and tissues due to hypoxia or lack of blood flow. Over time this will leave the cervical spine, and postural muscles weakened and susceptible to injury. This leads to a functional change to the mechanics of how your neck works and can lead to early degenerative changes in the joints and discs in the cervical spine. Postural changes such as forward head posture, rolled forward shoulders, and increased curvature of the upper back are common changes seen and cause neck pain.
