Pregnancy can be one of the most joyous times an expecting mother can experience. Knowing that she will soon welcome a beautiful newborn child to the world and will have the privilege to watching that child grow and learn can be one of life’s greatest experiences. However, with this joyous time, also comes a lot of rapid changes to her body that that can cause a ranging variety of problems such as muscle pain, neck pain, headache and lower back pain. Pregnancy related lower back pain is very common and is experienced in 50-70% of all pregnancies.
What causes back pain during pregnancy?
Lower back pain during pregnancy often times starts early in first or second trimesters. It is related to changes in the women’s body that will alter function and create back and muscle pain. Some of the more common reasons for the pains experienced during pregnancy, specifically low back pain includes weight gain, changes in bodies center of gravity, hormonal changes, posture changes, muscle separation, and stress. Each of these factors plays a different role in the increase of low back pain during a women’s pregnancy.
Medications are not the answer!
With so many concerns about moms and the baby’s health treatment options for back pain can become extremely limited. Pain medications can be potentially dangerous harmful to both mother and the fetus. Over the counter medications such as Tylenol and NSAID’s often times provide little or no relief and also come with their own set of risks and unknowns. A recent study of Ibprophen showed possible effects on fetal development and testis formation. Tylenol has been shown to be ineffective for the treatment of lower back pain in a double blind study against a placebo. Use LBP pregnant woman.
Is it safe and does it work?
A treatment that many women have found to be effective at relieving pain during their pregnancy is chiropractic care and studies have shown it to be very effective in helping both mother and the baby and essentially have no risk in having done. Chiropractic adjustments have been proven to reduce pain in the low back, pelvis, and hips of pregnant women. Additionally, chiropractic adjustments help ease sciatica pain, reduce stress, and reduce the frequency of headaches during pregnancy. In addition to these benefits, some of the other major benefits of visiting a chiropractor during pregnancy include relieving neck and joint pains, controlling symptoms of nausea, reducing the time of labor and delivery, and reduction in the likelihood of needing a cesarean delivery.
