Work Injuries & Workers’ Comp Services

Ohio Work Comp Injury Treatment

There are an estimated four million workers injured on the job in the United States every year. These injuries range from traumatic to chronic. The most usual organs involved are in the head, lungs, spine, back, hands, arms, legs and eyes. Work injuries can occur in an industrial and office setting. Causes of work injuries include exposure to hazards, manual handling of heavy items, misuse of equipment, poor ergonomics, failure of equipment and co-worker error.

The current Ohio Bureau of Worker’s Compensation (BWC) system can be difficult to understand and navigate as an injured worker in Ohio. Our physicians are Ohio BWC certified, and we are currently accepting injured worker cases as physician of record (POR) for new and old cases. Many family physicians and specialists no longer accept Ohio BWC patients as POR, leaving many injured workers with no way to get the necessary treatment, have the necessary paperwork filled out, and compensation forms completed.

We accept workers comp patients which may or may not need care in our office. As Certified Ohio BWC physicians we can manage your case as POR and still get you the care and treatment that is appropriate and necessary, even if it is not a case that requires chiropractic care. We work closely with many medical physicians and specialists if your case is in need of medical care or you need to see a specialist.

An initial consultation and examination does not need pre-certified, and you do not need to have a referral to see us. We have highly trained staff that can help with the necessary paperwork and make sure your case is handled correctly, and you get the necessary treatment to properly heal your injury and return you to work.

Injuries from work accidents can be debilitating and should be addressed immediately so that chronic problems do not persist. We believe that helping the worker perform to the best of their ability allows them to be productive and more content with their life. Our services are personalized, quality programs that give the injured worker the strength, endurance and confidence to make a safe return to work.

Work Conditioning/Hardening

When an injured worker is ready to take the next step toward returning to work, they may benefit from participating in a Work Conditioning/Hardening Program. The objective of the Work Conditioning/Hardening Program is to bridge the gap between acute care and returning to work. This is accomplished with a focus on following a comprehensive, multidisciplinary plan that develops strength, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and motor control. Furthermore, the program is designed to progressively improve the biomechanical, neuromuscular, cardiovascular, metabolic, and psychosocial functions of the worker to meet on-the-job demands that have been limited due to injury. Our sessions are highly structured, goal oriented, and individualized for each client making the sessions formulated to maximize functional outcomes in order for the participant to return to work without restrictions as quickly and safely as possible.

Advanced Chiropractic and Rehab, Inc. makes it our goal to have excellent communication with complete transparency for all involved parties (physicians, attorneys, workers’ compensation case managers, and employers) when it comes to addressing the clients’ progress in the program. Therefore, Advanced Chiropractic & Rehab provides weekly evaluations to determine the effectiveness of the client’s program in addition to determining if continued treatment is medically necessary.

Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a comprehensive evaluation that objectively measures a worker’s physical capabilities and tolerances through a variety of lifts and activities.  During this scientifically developed assessment a client’s strength, endurance, physical demand level and positional tolerance will be measured to determine safe lifting guidelines for a possible return to work. Our FCEs are peer-reviewed, validity-based, and legally defensible in the field of occupational rehabilitation. Our facility has a certified Functional Capacity Evaluator (CFCE) on hand to administer the FCE to ensure safety, reliability, validity, and practicality.

Advanced Chiropractic & Rehab, Inc. offers three types of evaluations: Baseline FCE, Job-Specific FCE, and Upper Extremity FCE. Each type of evaluation uses standardized tests and equipment to objectively determine a client’s safe and functional levels for a return to work and case closure. Across the board, the FCEs call on an expansive range of physical effort assessments such as isometric, biomechanical, cardiovascular, and behavioral. The Job-Specific FCE takes it one step further to add in elements of the job description provided by the employer. This sets the work tolerances with specific parameters and the use of structured work simulations. The Upper Extremity FCE will include extra activities that involve tasks specifically geared towards the upper extremity. These tasks are range of motion, strength, sensation, hand and arm coordination as well as work specific testing (such a tool use, keyboarding, etc).

Results are presented in a clear and concise report that is easy to read.  The outcomes are utilized to:

  • a) determine safe job matches for return to work;
  • b) determine the level of reasonable accommodations necessary for reinstating an injured worker
  • c) make recommendations regarding future interventions.

Additionally, the results of the FCE may be used by the physician to make a disability rating for insurance purposes.
